About
My name is Lord Hardthrasher and for a few years now I, along with my faithful man servant, Jenkins, and my long suffering wife, Her Ladyship, have been making history videos on YouTube for the delight and delectation of the masses. Focusing mostly, but not solely, on the Second World War, we’ve covered everything from the Battle of Britain to the Bomber War to the war in Burma…and there’s more to come. Or at least, there had better be as the lead in the East Wing roof won’t replace itself, and Her Ladyship’s swarthy young tennis coach costs a bloody fortune.
When I was a boy History was taught as a series of dates, with little in the way of context or analysis needed of the student to pass an exam. These days academic historians are required, rightly, to put their emotions to one side and analyse what the sources tell them in a dispassionate way. This is fine as far as it goes. But for the average person, they want a story, some drama, some context. They may be badly bred little oiks from the local sink estate today but perhaps their forebears were Queens and Kings and….well, ok, statistically speaking they were almost certainly equally unwashed peasants for generations, but that’s not the point. History is critical to our understanding of who we are, how we behave and the ideas we stand up for; knowing how we got here allow us to perhaps avoid the more obvious mistakes, or at least spot the odious toads of our world when we see them. It should be fun, it should be red in tooth and claw, and it should make one feel something. Only *then* you can get into why wool markets in Eastern England thrived in the 1400s (it was export, it usually is).
So come with me as we skip down the garden path of history towards the potting shed of research, wherein to partake of the illicit spirit still of emotion and get right royally drunk together.
